Guest Blog - How The Big Meno Event helped me... by Clare Wilson
Attending The Big Meno Event as on-the-day support for Suzanne Barbour was an eye-opening experience. Not only was I there to assist, but I was also keen to learn more about menopause—a subject becoming increasingly relevant to me as I approach the start of peri-menopause.
I’ve written this blog from my own perspective to highlight just how essential it is to hold events like The Big Meno Event. It’s crucial to create spaces where women can come together to share experiences and build a sense of purpose—especially around topics that have, in the past, been considered taboo.
The atmosphere was electric from the moment I arrived. Women from all walks of life gathered, united by a shared purpose: to connect, learn, and empower one another. This sense of community felt so refreshing and underscored how vital it is to have spaces where women can openly discuss their experiences, free from judgment.
The event was brilliantly hosted by the wonderful Amy Oakden from BBC Tees, whose excellent hosting skills, warm connection with the audience, and sparkling touch truly elevated the experience for everyone.
An Evening of Empowerment
The evening was nothing short of empowering. Surrounded by women sharing their stories and insights, I felt a profound sense of solidarity. The speakers were not just knowledgeable; they were relatable, bringing humour, warmth, and empathy to a topic that can feel isolating. Hearing personal stories transformed the science of menopause into something accessible and human. Dr. Fi was particularly wonderful. She had a calm, reassuring presence that set everyone at ease and made complex medical concepts about menopause engaging for all. Her expertise shone as she explained the biological changes, yet she managed to keep things light and understandable for those of us who might otherwise find the subject daunting.

Understanding Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
Dr. Fi’s session took a deep dive into menopause from a medical perspective, focusing on Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It’s a topic often shrouded in misconceptions, and her balanced approach to it was a breath of fresh air. She explained the role of hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone and how their decline impacts physical health and emotional well-being. This gradual hormonal change can lead to symptoms including hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, and disrupted sleep.
One of the sessions most valuable elements was Dr. Fi’s focus on demystifying common myths around HRT. For years, misinformation has created a stigma around HRT, partly due to older studies that linked hormone therapy with increased health risks. Dr. Fi reassured the audience with more recent research, highlighting the benefits of HRT for many women when started around the time of menopause. She was clear that HRT is not a one-size-fits-all solution, encouraging women to have open discussions with their healthcare providers to explore options tailored to their individual needs. This emphasis on personalised treatment felt empowering, a reminder that we all have agency over our healthcare decisions.
Compassionate Clarity
What truly set Dr. Fi apart was her ability to deliver information with compassion and clarity. She acknowledged the emotional burden many women feel around menopause and seeking treatment, encouraging questions and addressing concerns with empathy. By the end of her session, attendees expressed a newfound sense of empowerment. They left with a clearer understanding of their options and a sense of agency over their health. Dr. Fi’s compassionate approach not only educated but inspired, fostering a sense of community among us all. As I reflected on her talk, it was evident that her insights would linger well beyond the event.
Insights into Supplements
Alicia’s session on supplements was equally insightful. She shared practical advice on which supplements might ease various symptoms, grounding her recommendations in evidence. With so much conflicting information about supplements, her straightforward and accessible approach was refreshing. I’ve been exploring options to support myself through these changes, and Alicia’s advice on integrating supplements into our routines was incredibly helpful. She emphasised listening to our bodies, a simple yet powerful reminder to honour our own needs.
Addressing Mental Health
Andrea’s discussion on mental health was both emotional and vital. Her candidness in sharing her experiences resonated deeply, shedding light on the often-overlooked mental health aspects of menopause. According to NHS England, approximately one in four women experience mood changes or depression around menopause, yet these symptoms are often misdiagnosed as anxiety or other mental health conditions. Andrea stressed the importance of recognising the emotional challenges many face during this life stage, as well as seeking the right support. Studies in the UK reveal that around 51% of women report feeling unsupported by their healthcare providers during menopause, often leaving them without the right care. Andrea encouraged us to seek compassionate professionals who understand these complexities, empowering us to advocate for our mental health.
The Overlooked Connection: Menopause and Mental Health
The truth is, mental health is too often sidelined in conversations about menopause, though it is as critical as physical symptoms. Many women report significant changes in mood and emotional well-being, yet these are frequently dismissed as stress or unrelated conditions. This lack of understanding can lead to misdiagnosis, unnecessary treatments, or a lack of support for women at this stage of life.
Andrea’s session underscored the importance of self-advocacy and community. She reminded us to be vocal about our needs and to find healthcare providers who take our experiences seriously. Addressing mental health in the context of menopause is crucial, and having the confidence to seek the right support can make all the difference.
Embracing Change
As the evening progressed, I found myself reflecting on my own journey. This event has helped me reframe menopause as a ‘change in seasons’—a transition akin to autumn. Just as nature cycles through phases, so too do we. Rather than holding on to the past, I’ve learned to embrace this new season, seeing it as an opportunity for growth, wisdom, and renewal.
The insights I gained from the speakers and the connections I made with other women have shifted my perspective on menopause. It no longer feels like something to dread but rather a new chapter filled with possibility and resilience.
Gratitude and Looking Forward
A heartfelt thank you to Suzanne for creating an event that brought women of all ages and backgrounds together to learn and feel empowered. This experience has sparked a desire within me to keep exploring and sharing information about menopause, not just for myself but for other women on this journey.
I left The Big Meno Event feeling uplifted and ready to approach this new chapter with knowledge, community, and support. Continuing these conversations is vital; sharing our stories helps us lift one another as we navigate these changes.
